Bedtime can be quite a challenge when you have a toddler. Those precious hours of rest can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. But fear not, tired parents, because I've got an incredible tool that can turn bedtime into a breeze: the Three Sleepy Rules.
As an infant and child sleep consultant, I've seen countless bedtime struggles shift to success. Today, I am sharing with you a proven method that can transform bedtime from a battleground into a peaceful routine.
My Three Sleepy Rules for toddlers are simple: Lie down, be quiet, and close your eyes.
The Three Sleepy Rules sound simple, but the reason they work so well is that our toddlers understand what is expected of them. Compare that to the often used phrase “go to sleep”… This is a really abstract idea and not one of us can force ourselves to sleep, so why do we say this to our smallest children? Let’s change the narrative and help our toddlers and preschoolers set themselves up well to fall asleep easily.
The Bedtime Chart: A Fun Tool for Toddler Success
Now, here's where the magic happens. We're going to create a bedtime chart with your toddler. This chart will not only make bedtime fun but also help your little one understand and follow the Three Sleepy Rules.
Step 1: Chart Creation Sit down with your toddler and let them be a part of the process. Use colourful markers, stickers, and drawings to create a chart that showcases the Three Sleepy Rules. You can even add some stars, smiley faces, or a favourite character to make it more exciting.
Step 2: Personalization Allow your toddler to personalise their chart. Add some other bedtime ideas to the chart. This could be book reading, cuddles, or letting them choose a favourite toy or stuffed animal to accompany them to bed. This newfound bedtime buddy can provide comfort and a sense of security.
Step 3: Rule Explanation Explain each of the Three Sleepy Rules (and any other “rules” you’ve added) to your toddler in simple, easy-to-understand language. For example, "Lie down" means you need to stay in your bed, "be quiet" means no talking, and "close your eyes" means it's time to relax.
Share the Magic with Family and Friends
Once your chart is ready, don't keep it a secret! Share the Three Sleepy Rules and your toddler's special bedtime chart with family and friends. This creates a sense of excitement and importance around bedtime, making it even more special for your little one.
Imagine Grandma reading a bedtime story while your toddler proudly shows off their chart and snuggles with their beloved bunny. It's a beautiful way to make bedtime a cherished family ritual.
The Right Words: A Gentle Approach to Bedtime
Now, here's a crucial tip: Toddlers can be anxious about going to sleep, so it's best to avoid phrases like "don't get out of bed" or "go to sleep." These phrases can be confusing for them. Instead, use positive and clear language.
Say something like, "It's time to lie down and snuggle with your bunny. Shhh We'll have quiet time now." This gentle approach helps your toddler understand what's expected without causing any unnecessary stress.
